Embellish your scarf: six rules of thumb

In addition to knitwear, sustainability is our top priority. So, we'd like to give you a few rules of thumb about maintaining your Leselles scarf or jumper. That way, we can ensure that the second life of your item is extra long.

1 Small loads, large loads

Feel free to pop it in the washer. As long as it is equipped with a delicate wash programme, that is. With this programme, your knitwear is washed at a low temperature (20-30°) and without intense spinning (max. 600 rpm). Because knitwear needs room to soak, it is important not to overload the washer drum.

2 Do it by hand!

No delicate/wool wash programme available on your washing machine? Then, be on the safe side and wash your scarf by hand.

Fill a washbasin or bath with some lukewarm water and add a bit of detergent - baby shampoo is also a good idea! Soak your scarf gently (certainly do not rub it) and rinse well with lukewarm water. Wring it out very carefully to retain its shape.

3 Know what you use for soaking

Choose a suitable detergent for wool. This is specially developed so as not to damage delicate fibres. Also, don’t use too much detergent: this can remain in your knitwear and give it a musty odour in the long run. No fabric softener is needed.

4 Drying cabinet? Not advised.

Our knitwear and the drying cabinet are not a good combination. After washing it, lay your scarf flat on a towel to let it dry. And certainly, do not hang it on a coat rack, as this may stretch the fibres.

Nor is the iron a good friend to your scarf: at the very most, you can remove stubborn creases by moving the iron a few centimetres above your scarf - the heat will make them disappear. A steamer is a safe alternative.

5 Is washing really necessary?

Knitwear rarely washed lasts for much longer. Is your scarf not dirty, but does it have a musty odour? Then choose a linen spray or hang it outside on a coat rack for a while. A few hours of fresh air can do wonders.

6 Inhale, exhale

Is your knitwear dry and wrinkle-free? Then, lay it neatly folded and horizontally in the cupboard. Make sure you don't jam your clothes too closely together and ensure that fabrics get enough oxygen to breathe.
